WDM Multiplexers
CWDM
Course wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) supports up to 18 wavelength channels
DWDM
Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) supports up to 80 simultaneous wavelength transmissions.
FWDM
Filter-based Wavelength Division Multiplexer (FWDM) can multiplex or de-multiplex two or more optical signals of different wavelengths in a single wide wavel
What is WDM? Types of the WDM?
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a technology used in fiber optic communications to combine and transmit multiple optical carrier signals on a single fiber optic cable by using different wavelengths (colors) of laser light. This method effectively increases the capacity of a single fiber to carry multiple independent data streams.
There are several types of WDM, each catering to different requirements in terms of capacity, distance, and cost:
Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM):
- Spacing and Capacity: CWDM uses wider spacing between wavelengths, typically around 20 nm. This allows for up to 18 channels to be multiplexed over a single fiber.
- Range and Application: Ideal for short to medium-range communication, such as within metropolitan areas or in data center interconnects. It’s less expensive than some other WDM technologies.
Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM):
- Spacing and Capacity: DWDM employs much narrower spacing between wavelengths, often less than 1 nm, allowing for the multiplexing of up to 80 or more channels on a single fiber.
- Range and Application: Suited for long-haul transmission with high capacity demands, such as in backbone network infrastructures. It’s more expensive due to the precision required in component manufacturing.
Filter Wavelength Division Multiplexing (FWDM):
- Function: FWDM is a type of WDM that uses thin-film filters. It’s commonly used for combining or separating a small number of wavelengths (usually one or two), often in conjunction with other WDM technologies.
- Application: Widely used in applications like adding or dropping a single wavelength from a multi-wavelength signal, or in ROADM (Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer) systems.
Ultra Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (UDWDM):
- Spacing and Capacity: UDWDM refers to systems that have channel spacings narrower than typical DWDM systems, with spacings potentially less than 0.2 nm.
- Application: Aimed at extremely high-capacity and efficient spectral utilization, UDWDM is still largely in the experimental or specialized application stage.
WDM fiber enables multiple streams of data to be carried over a single fiber connection.
Reliable WDM Multiplexers at the Heart of WDM Fiber Networks
The WDM multiplexer assigns the different data channels to different wavelengths of light using Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) or Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM).
Pro Optix has a range of four WDM multiplexers which are designed for different performance and density requirements.
Flexible WDM Transceivers in a Wide Range of Form Factors
WDM transceivers convert the electrical signal from the host equipment into the optical signals which carry the data streams.
Our large range of transceivers are available in a wide range of MFA compliant form factors to ensure full compatibility with servers and routers.
Considerations in selecting the correct WDM multiplexer solution
CWDM multiplexing or DWDM multiplexing
CWDM Multiplexers – Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing uses up to 18 wavelengths in a fiber pair and is suitable for shorter distances, max. 120 km.
DWDM Multiplexers – Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing uses up to 96 wavelengths on one fiber pair and can send more data over longer distances without interference. CWDM and DWDM also use different types of laser plus it is also possible to complete DWDM with light signal amplification for longer distances.
MUX or DEMUX WDM Multiplexer Solutions
A MUX (multiplexer) multiplies signal into a single/dual fiber using different wavelengths/frequencies of light where each wavelength can send different types of data.
DEMUX (de-multiplexer) separates the signals again at the receiving end.
WDM Multiplexer Density – LC or CS Connectivity
LC connectivity is the traditional and current connectivity for multiplexers. This proven solution is utilized in the Pro Optix Standard, OFM, and MINI multiplexer series. LC can be applied in different formats; hence density can vary.
CS connectivity is a new type for the industry, offering significant density increases alongside upgraded robustness in a new connectivity design patented by Senko.
