What are cabinet and racks?

ZION offers a complete line of open frame racks and cabinets that support all applications, from single rack or cabinet applications (such as retail and telecom closets) to high-density, multi-rack/multi cabinet patching and switching fields (in computer rooms, data centers, and central offices).

Cabinets

  • Enclosed versions of racks, with sidewalls, doors, and often a roof, provide added security and environmental protection. They include ventilation systems for cooling and are chosen for their security features and in environments where equipment needs extra protection.

Mainly types of cabinet:

  • Server Cabinet, Network Cabinet
  • Floor-standing Cabinet, Wall-Mount Cabinet

Racks

  • Open-frame structures for mounting electronic equipment like servers, allowing easy access and good airflow. They have rails or hooks for equipment alignment and are typically used where quick access and cooling are important.
  • Both are measured in standard rack units (‘U’) for compatibility, with the typical width being 19 inches. The choice between racks and abinets depends on the need for security, environmental conditions, and the specific equipment requirements.

How to chose the right cabinet or rack
for the data centers,computer rooms and central offices?

Design Differences

  • Racks: Data center racks are open structures, lacking side panels, walls, or doors. They come in two types: two-post racks with one mounting point, and four-post racks with two mounting points (front and back). These racks can be wallmounted, stand-alone frames, or specialized computer cases.

  • Cabinets: In contrast, data center cabinets are enclosed, with side panels, and often have tempered glass or plexiglass doors. They require unlocking for access and typically feature built-in ventilation systems. Some have flexible side panels for easy access or increased airflow. Most data center cabinets are four-post racks.

Size and Measurement Standards

  • Rack Size: Measured in rack units (‘U’ or ‘RU’), with one unit equaling 1.75 inches (44.45 mm). Standard rack dimensions are typically 19 inches wide by 36 inches deep.

  • Cabinet Size: Cabinets vary from half-size (24U) to full-size (42U), with options ranging from 16U to 58U. A 42U cabinet can hold up to forty-two 1U devices or a combination of different U-sized units.

Physical size

  • Width dimensions will vary based on the need to manage cables, patch cords and airflow Depth is mostly dependent on the intended use and dimensions of equipment to be installed.

  • Height choice of size is based on functionality and equipment loading, the physical limitation being the floor to ceiling height. Data Center designers drive the demand for increased RU capacity with 47U and 52U gaining popularity.

Applications

  • IT Equipment Storage: Both racks and cabinets store servers (rack-mounted or blade), networking components, cooling systems, and
    UPS.

  • Ventilation: They provide essential airflow to cool down heat-generating servers. Cabinets often have additional perforated materials for cooling.

  • Cable Management: Racks are particularly useful for organizing and protecting cables and wires.

  • Security: Cabinets offer more security for sensitive data storage, with lockable doors to protect against unauthorized access.

  • Wall Mount Bracket: A device for securing network equipment, like patch panels or switches, directly to a wall, suitable for limited spaces.
  • Power Distribution Unit (PDU): Distributes electrical power to IT equipment within racks or cabinets, available in basic and intelligent versions for power management.
  • Cooling: Systems, including fans and air conditioning units, essential for maintaining optimal temperatures and preventing overheating of IT equipment in racks or cabinets.
  • Shelf: Used for placing non-rack-mountable equipment in racks or cabinets, available in various sizes and weight capacities.
  • Cable Manager: Organizes and protects cables within a rack or cabinet, ensuring order and preventing tangling or damage.
  • Drawer & Plinth: A drawer provides storage for accessories, while a plinth is a base that elevates racks or cabinets for stability and airflow.
    TC Digital Temperature Unit: A digital tool for monitoring the temperature inside a rack or cabinet to ensure safe operating conditions for the equipment.

Quality Control System

In order to provide our customers with cabinet (Server cabinet/network cabinet/wall mount cabinet) that are accurate and meet their performance requirements, the following steps are taken during production to control quality.

First, and most importantly, our salesmen will first communicate with our customers to clarify the quality requirements that they need for their order, and then carry out the following quality process control according to this requirement.

1, IQC (Incoming quality control) of steel

High-quality SPCC thick cold-rolled steel plates can produce high-quality cabinets. Our company selects steel plates processed with advanced condensing technology, which have excellent pressure and vibration resistance. And our quality inspectors will strictly inspect each batch of incoming materials according to our company standards.

2,IPQC(In-process quality control) of cabinet (Server cabinet/network cabinet/wall mount cabinet).

Cabinet production process mainly consists of seven processes:

1 product design – 2 cutting – 3 stamping processing – 4 bending processing – 5 welding connection – 6 overall assembly – 7 cabinet surface treatment.

In order to produce high quality cabinets, there are very strict requirements for each step.

3, Testing After Assembly

The finished product has undergone strict quality inspection, screening, and control, Each process includes four inspections: self-inspection, first inspection, patrol inspection and final inspection.and fully complies with ANSI/EIARS-310-D, IEC60297-2, DIN41494, PART1, DIN41494, PART7 standards, to ensure that Zion produces products and must be quality products.  

4, Finished Inspection.When your order is completed, we will check the cabinet (Server cabinet/network cabinet/wall mount cabinet) specification, electrical properties, physical properties, product appearance and packaging (including printing, color, labeling, etc.), quantity and other important information in conjunction with PI, production technical sheet, packaging, labeling and other confirmed documents. We ensure that our deliveries are accurate in this way.
