ONU Internet access function introduction

As a network communication device, ONU plays the same role as routers and switches, and both are devices that transmit data. The difference is that ONUs can be centrally managed, and data is transferred to upper-level equipment through optical fibers.

The ONU can usually be used. To enable the devices connected to the ONU wifi and network port to access the network usually, the following basic configuration process is required:

Step 1: ONU must be successfully registered on the OLT

Step 2: The OLT must issue the configuration of related service channels to the ONU, such as uplink bandwidth, service VLAN ID channel, and other configurations (ONU WAN configuration, DHCP/PPPOE, VLAN ID, wifi, and other configurations are private configurations and use third-party chips. The developed ONU does not support)

Step 3: Log in to the ONU management web to configure a wan connection, Vlan ID, DHCP/PPPOE, and other configurations.

Note: Chinese operators generally use TR069 for configuration or pre-fabricate these configurations into the ONU software by default when the ONU leaves the factory.

Overseas customers often log in remotely to ONU to manage web configuration wan connection, Vlan ID, DHCP/PPPOE, and other configurations.

Step 4: After the ONU is configured, the IP of the operator’s DHCP/PPPOE server can be customarily obtained, and then you can connect to the network port of the ONU or connect to the wifi of the ONU to access the network.

On the ONU equipment, there are generally only two interfaces that mainly provide customers to connect to the Internet: Ethernet port and wifi. The user primarily accesses the network by combining these two ports.

The network port is called the RJ45 interface, it can also be called the ETH port or it can be called the LAN interface. At present, the network port of ONU has 10M/100M adaptive (FE network port) and 10M/100M/1000M adaptive network port (GE network port). It can be said that any device that has a network port and needs to transmit data can be connected to the ONU for network data transmission.

For example, connect computers, routers, switches, set-top boxes, printers, cameras, and other devices with network ports, and provide these devices with access to the Internet to transmit data. (Routers or switches need to be cautious. Connecting to an ONU may form a network loop, causing link network congestion, delays in Internet access, etc., which can cause the entire network to be paralyzed)

We have different network port types on extra ONUs, such as 1GE, 1GE+1FE, 1GE+3FE, 4GE, and other network port combinations. These combinations require the primary chip support of the ONU. For example, our BT-211XR model ONU uses a 9602C chip, which only supports two network ports (1 FE and 1 GE) and does not support expansion to 3 network ports or four networks. It does not support growth into 2 GE network ports. If you need support, choose other types of main chips.

  • Realtek RTL9601B/RTL9601D chip, maximum support 1GE;
  • Realtek RTL9602C chip, maximum support 1GE+1FE;
  • Realtek RTL9603C chip, maximum support 1GE+3FE;
  • Realtek RTL9607C chip, maximum support 4GE;

How the ONU connects to the network

What is an IP address?

IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is an Internet Protocol address, also translated as an Internet Protocol address.

The IP address gives a number to a computer (or Ethernet communication device) on the Internet. Everyone sees daily that every networked PC needs an IP address to communicate normally. We can compare “personal computer” to “a telephone,” then “IP address” is equivalent to “telephone number,” and the router on the Internet is equal to the “program-controlled switchboard” of the telecommunications bureau.

How to obtain an IP address

The IP address of the network device needs to be assigned by the server of the front-end device, such as a DHCP server or a PPPOE server. The DHCP server and PPPOE server are generally set up on the core router, and the core router assigns IP addresses uniformly to avoid IP address conflicts (same) in the same network, resulting in devices unable to access the Internet.

Generally, the IP address of the ONU connected to the network must be obtained from the front-end core router server (DHCP or PPPOE server). Therefore, the HGU type ONU integrates the client of DHCP and PPPOE, and the client requests the IP address that can connect to the network from the server.
